What would make this a great wiki would be for people to help by contributing some great teaching ideas everyone can use.
You can add a link to a favorite website, like my favorite one for space: [1]called Window to the Universe. You could also upload a favorite lesson plan - or just a quick idea for teaching a mini lesson. Come on....Add something!
I'll start. When I'm teaching kids about graphing, I want to be sure they include all the parts of a graph, so I teach them that before any graph can have data, it needs a hand. We draw a big hand and on the thumb is the title, first finger is the x axis label, second finger is the y axis label, ring finger is the x axis interval, and the little finger is the y axis interval. By making sure every graph gets a hand before any data is plotted, the necessary parts (labels) of a graph are present.
Ok...I have been hearing about some great online resources and I've sent out emails, but I thought I'd also post them here so I can tell a little about the site as well as give the link.
The first one is Wordle. [2]This site lets you type in words around a topic - say - freedom. The more often a word is typed, the larger it will be in the final word cloud that will be made. Add lots of words, repeat some then click "Go." You can change the wordle if you don't like the first one...I think it would be great when trying to get kids to think about big ideas, and to help them put words to their thoughts.
Another one I just heard about is Phrasr. [3]It is part of Flickr. You type in any phrase, then the website assigns a picture to go with each word. You can change the pictures or have no picture for some words. I think it would be neat to use to have kids illustrate a simile or metaphor.
Are you tired of posters that look like kids threw them together the night before? Try Glogster.[4] You can get a teacher account and student accounts and have students create posters with some writing to go along with it! To register and get student accounts click this website [5]. You'll get private student logins and passwords so student work is kept from public access.
If you have more ideas or websites, please add to the list!
